As noted earlier, the City of Riviera Beach in Palm Beach County was hit with a ransomware attack on May 28th.

Today the board voted 5-0 to authorize the ransom payment – 65 bitcoins.

Let’s hope that with the ransom payment- the criminals actually provide the encryption key.

Some systems have been partially restored, but ‘crucial data encrypted by the attackers remains beyond reach’.

The FBI is investigating the attack, which officials said began after someone in the police department opened an infected email.

“The outage forced police and fire to write down 911 calls on paper.”
