WASHINGTON (February 23, 2016)—A coalition of 911 public safety and industry leaders, in cooperation with the National 911 Program and the Next Generation 911 Institute, today announced a nationwide effort to accelerate the implementation of Next Generation 911 (NG911) services by the end of 2020.

I applaud the thoughtfulness and dedication of those individuals and organizations who put together this coalition.

It is a very challenging goal.

Depending on where you live today , 9-1-1 funding and operations may be governed at the state, county or municipal level.

This diverse governance structure and its resulting political complexity, will make it extremely difficult to transition our entire nation to NG9-1-1 by the end of 2020.

The technical challenge only further complicates the project.

Whatever your personal thoughts are about FirstNet, it provides a national plan. We do not have that today for 9-1-1. Hopefully the NG911 Now initiative will have an impact.
